Teachers Pay Teachers: Get Your Store Started!

I am so excited to spend some time this summer updating the blog with information about joining Teachers Pay Teachers as a seller and starting your very own (and profitable) teacher store! I have so many notes, ideas, tips, and freebies for you! So please be checking back and subscribe to be notified with new TPT content.

Why start a Teachers Pay Teachers store? TPT is a fantastic tool used by busy teachers all over the world. Teachers come looking for lesson ideas, math and reading centers, classroom decor, quizzes, digital resources, and more! I’m sure you yourself have been a faithful buyer on TPT’s website. When you purchase a product from Teachers Pay Teachers, the money is going straight to someone who is just like you! A kindergarten teacher, a coach, a homeschool mom, a high school science teacher, someone who loves learning and making teaching easier for teachers! I know you have spent time making and creating fantastic lessons for your classroom, and I promise that someone out there would purchase it from you if given the chance! Let me teach you how! In this blog, I will outline how to join TPT as a seller, and how to start brainstorming ideas for your store. Some free brainstorming worksheets will be available for you! Keep reading to get the download.

How to Join Teachers Pay Teachers as a Seller

Step 1: Create an account

Head over to teacherspayteachers.com and click “Join.” If you already have a buyer account (which makes sense!) just click on your profile icon in the top right when you are logged in. Then click on “Become a Seller.” By now you will have the option to be a “basic” seller or a “premium” seller. I would suggest sticking with the free option for right now. You can upgrade later, once your store is making money!

Step 2: Enter the necessary information

If your Teachers Pay Teachers account is brand new, you will need to enter more information about your self and create a password. Continue until you are able to register!

Step 3: Name your Shop!

Congratulations! You have officially registered as a TPT seller! Now, you should be seeing your seller dashboard. Get used to this page, it has everything you need. But you might have noticed that you haven’t had a chance to name your new shop! Let’s fix that.

Click the icon in the upper right to access your account information. Click “My Account”

Here you will have access to your seller account. Take note that in order to get paid by Teachers Pay Teachers for sales that you make, you will need to come back here and set up a Hyperwallet account. Please come back and do this ASAP! But for now, let’s continue setting up our store and adding a name!

Here is everything you have access to in your Teachers Pay Teachers account. We will update your store name and information under “Store Profile.”

Now you can make your shop more “you.” Click “edit” to add a store name and upload a logo or picture! If you haven’t thought about a logo yet, no worries! Just add a photo of yourself. Do not leave your profile picture blank. If you want other teachers to take your store seriously, add a photo!

Step 4: Get familiar with the dashboard

Now that you have a sellers account, a store name and photo, you are ready to get familiar with the Teachers Pay Teachers seller layout. Any time you want to access information about your shop, click the shop icon in the upper right. The drop-down menu will get you back to the dashboard, show you your storefront, give you a sales report, and more! Click “dashboard” for now and spend some time getting familiar with it!

Planning your first Teachers Pay Teachers Product

If you didn’t know this already, your very first product that you upload to Teachers Pay Teachers has to be a FREE download. Teachers love free products, and having a freebie in your store will bring extra traffic, more followers, and much needed store reviews. Plus, it gives buyers a chance to see if they like your style.

I have created some brainstorming worksheets for you to print and use to jot down your ideas. You need to plan one freebie and one paid product to get your store started. Consider what grade levels you want to target and what lesson content you are most comfortable (and confident) with! For example, your store should probably not be selling kindergarten reading centers and high school biology quizzes. Teachers will be so confused!

Once you have decided on grade levels and content, start writing down all the ideas you have for your store products! My first freebie was a lemonade-themed addition review game for first graders. I loved it! After that, I started designing more lemonade-themed products that I could sell.

More Helpful Tips for Teachers Pay Teachers

I will do a longer post later about designing your TPT products, but for now I want to help you get some inspiration for your first two products. Clip art is very helpful when making your TPT products. And lots of clip artists on TPT have free options that you can use in your products. Make sure you read their Terms of Use (copyright information). Most clip art is fine to use in an educational resource as long as credit is given to the artist and it is not the sole part of your design. More on this in a future post!

For now, I want you to get your Teachers Pay Teachers shop open and named. Add a profile picture or a logo. Print off the brainstorming worksheets (grab these below) and start writing down all of your ideas! I cannot wait to see what you come up with! Comment below the name of your new shop so I can check it out!
